Anna | September 29, 2022

Ahh, Zermatt… nestled under the iconic Matterhorn this incredible swiss ski resort is a true mecca for foodies.  With around 100 restaurants, 24 of which have earned a Michelin star and over 50 on the slopes, Zermatt is a gourmet paradise for Alpine dining.

Picture this: it’s mid-March, the sun is shining, you’ve skied some of the highest pistes in Europe and you’ve just sat down for lunch opposite the breathtaking Matterhorn to enjoy some of the best authentic Swiss cuisine in the world. In our opinion, it doesn’t get much better than this!

To help point you in the right direction for the best on and off-slope dining in Zermatt, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to Zermatt’s best restaurants both on and off the piste.

The Best Restaurants in Zermatt on and off the piste

Zermatt Mountain Restaurants

Chez Vrony – Sitting at 2,130 meters in the Findeln area high above Zermatt itself, proudly serving organic home produce and using traditional recipes handed down across generations Chez Vrony is the epitome of classic Swiss cuisine and culture. Enjoy a warm welcome with breathtaking views of the Matterhorn while you feast on traditional dried beef, homemade sausages and alpine cheeses.

Chalet Etoile – Situated at 2,750 meters at the bottom of the Cervino and dating back to 1974, Chalet Etoile is a historic mountain restaurant known for its blend of innovative recipes like tempura reindeer filet and king crab ravioli, to more traditional cuisine. Sit back and soak up the sun while enjoying the wide range of local wines, swift service and stunning views.

Zum See – Nestled away in a tiny hamlet just off of the Blatten piste at 1,766 meters, Zum See provides a warm and homely atmosphere whilst incorporating stunning views of the Matterhorn. Dine out on excellent gourmet cuisine air-dried beef and Valais cheese, lightly cooked calf’s liver with rösti, and round things off with a Sachertorte and cream.

Iglu Dorf – Sitting at 2,727 meters this is truly a one-of-a-kind mountain dining experience. Indulge in a traditional Swiss cheese fondue or dip in a hot tub in the middle of the igloo village in Zermatt on Rotenboden with the iconic Matterhorn for a backdrop. Reconstructed year after year by international artists, the Iglu-Dorf is a special place that will stick in your memory forever.

Zermatt in-resort Restaurants

After Seven – Only open during Zermatts busy winter season this is not to be missed. With its eye-catching open kitchen and creative mix of native/cosmopolitan, fresh seasonal and occasionally exotically inspired cuisine is the reason the After Seven has been the winner of many accolades. If fine dining is your thing then look no further than the wonders of chef Ivo Adam at After Seven.

Restaurant Schaferstube – For a cosy, authentic Swiss experience, Restaurant Schaferstube ticks all the boxes. Specialising in traditional delicacies such as Raclette, cheese and meat fondue or the famed Zermatt Lamb cooked on the woodfire grill, there really is no better place to rest and replenish after a long day on the slopes. And if you’re in the mood for a post-dinner drink, the plush settings of the Hotel Julen bar on the floor above has you covered.

Chez Heini –  For a more relaxed dining experience, this family-run business on the edge of the resort provides the perfect atmosphere. Famed for its regional specialities such as its grilled lamb, done on an open fire and turned in mouth-watering herbs, and spices, all accompanied by a live musical performance at the end of the night by Dan Daniell (owner Heini’s son), Chez Heini is guaranteed to leave a lasting impression.

Zermatt Apres Ski
