RESORT GUIDE

FOR KIDS

Val d’Isère is incredibly family-friendly, boasting a wide range of childcare options, from private nannies and village nurseries to ski schools and academic holiday tutors. The ESF-run children’s area is one of the best in the Alps, offering lessons from age three and activities tailored for all ages and abilities. Off the slopes, families can enjoy excellent facilities, including a sports and swimming complex and an ice rink, ensuring plenty of entertainment for kids during their stay.

APRES SKI & NIGHTLIFE

Despite being modern and purpose-built, Val Thorens is one of the livelier resorts for après ski in the French Alps, with several of the venues noting that they are, for example, “the highest Irish pub in Europe” (that’s The Shamrock).

When the lifts close the on-mountain Folie Douce by the Plein Sud and Pionniers lifts is usually buzzing with its signature cabaret acts and table dancing, but there are plenty of lively bars dpwn is resort too including The Frog and Roast Beef which has a very popular happy house and live music, the Red Fox for karaoke and the Sherlock.

There are plenty of quieter options if you’re looking for less full-on nightlife including the Rhum Box Cafe and O’Connells while Driv’Inn is run by Val Thorens local, Gérard Faggio and is themes on F1 motor racing with F1 simulators where you can even do some simulated ice driving.

Most bars stay open to 2am and there are a couple of nightspots as well including Malaysia, open to 4am with a two-hour happy hour from 10.30pm to half-past-midnight which has hosted some of the world’s best DJs including Rudimental, AfroJack and Calvin Harris.

MOUNTAIN RESTAURANTS

Chalet de la Marine located on the Piste Les Dalles and accessed via the Cascades chairlift is one of the best restaurants in the 3 Valleys, great food, table service and arguably the best terrace in the resort when the weather’s good.

Chez Pepe Nicolas located off the Piste de La Chasse down to Les Menuires is in a simply beautiful location away from the crowds with a lovely terrace to enjoy the great food and the view from.

Les Chalets du Val Thorens is a one stop shop with table-service and self-service restaurants and even a snack bar serving paninis or Belgian waffles on its extensive terrace as well as ‘Wokski’ serving up healthy asian food.

IN RESORT RESTAURANTS

The cosy, rustic Au Mazot tops the table as most popular restaurant in Val Thorens. Savoyard specialities including fondue, raclette and grilled meats.

Alpen Art is a little different to the ski resort norm with an art house vibe and jazz playing. It’s scaled the charts of popularity in Val Thorens though, in good part due to the accommodating owner and great food.

L’Auberge des Balcons is a favourite with seasonaires and holiday visitors alike – friendly, great atmosphere, good food, lots of it.
